The Tamil Nadu Solar School (TNSS) Program is a forward-thinking initiative aimed at partnering with the Tamil Nadu government to transform government schools in the state into eco-friendly, sustainable centers of education. This program seeks to install solar photovoltaic panels in these schools, fostering a greener future while educating the next generation about the importance of renewable energy and environmental stewardship.

Key Program Highlights:

Solar Capacity: The program proposes to equip government schools in Tamil Nadu with 226 MW of solar panel capacity, which is sufficient to supply the electricity demand of approximately 37,000 government schools.

Clean Energy Production: The solar power capacity will generate 330 GWhr/year of electricity, making a substantial contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This aligns perfectly with the climate goals outlined in the Paris Accord. To put it into perspective, this solar electricity generation will result in a reduction of 270,600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. To make this impact even more relatable, this is equivalent to removing 117,765 internal combustion cars from the streets.

Educational Impact: Beyond just power generation, the program prioritizes eco-education. It empowers students with hands-on experience in renewable energy, imparting vital decision-making skills for a sustainable society.

Economic Viability: The program not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also exhibits a robust financial model. Through prudent financial planning, which accounts for electricity savings from the first year, the program is forecasted to recoup its initial investment of Rs 1,971 crores ($240 MIillion) within eleven years. Furthermore, it is expected to maintain a positive cash flow, generating additional funds for fifteen years beyond the breakeven point.
